January 17th, 2011 — about me, accessories, our wedding, the bride
Oh how I love my shoes!!! I actually have two pairs- a black pair, and the purple pair that I wore on my wedding day!
My shoes may look too high to be comfortable, but at the time I was wearing heels like this to work every day so I was quite used to walking around in them. My ballroom dancing shoes are not a lot lower than these divine purple shoes, so I knew I’d be able to dance in them too!

When I found them, I knew I had found the perfect shoes! I knew my wedding shoes HAD to be a gawjiss, rich, jewel purple colour, and I really wanted them to have these flowers on them so when I actually found them I was ecstatic!

These days, the trend is definitely leaning towards brightly coloured, statement-making, eye-catching wedding shoes! Just remember that if you are not used to wearing a specific type of shoe- especially high heels- choosing them for your wedding day because they look gawjiss on your feet means you are most likely going to be in physical pain. And be sure to wear them in, starting a few weeks before the wedding so that they don’t give you blisters.
I have found that the silicone shoe inserts, the little gel cushions- like Dr Scholl’s “party feet” range- work fantastically for me! Your feet will hurt whilst you’re wearing your shoes, but they won’t pain for hours afterwards once you’ve taken them off! The gel pads prevent the painful swelling that we are prone to after lots of walking and dancing in high heels, and they are available in most supermarkets. There is a South African version that I just can’t remember the name of right now, that is available in supermarkets, and you can get them for the balls of your feet, for under your heels, to cushion the arch of your foot- wherever your feet usually ache the most after you’ve worn heels. They do take some getting used to though, so if you want to try them do so BEFORE your wedding day!

My dream, once long ago, was that I would wear beautiful matching underwear on my wedding day. Gawjiss satin and lace, something I bought specially for my big day, and for my new husband…
But, if like me, you have HUGE boobs, matching underwear is very seldom an option.
The good news is that you actually can wear a dress with no sleeves or straps on your wedding day. I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to as I can’t find strapless bras, or even corsets in my bra size! But you do have a options.
If, like I could, you can afford to have a professional make your wedding gown- you can have enough boning put into the bodice that it would make a stack of water balloons look hot! Then you won’t need a bra at all. There are of course underwear specialists who can make you a corset or a bustier if you really feel like you will need one.
When it comes to knickers, comfort is important of course… As is how you feel. And we all know beautiful underwear can make you feel good about yourself.
If you’re lucky enough, and have worked hard enough, to look like Claudia Schiffer under your clothes, then by all means- go for the gawjiss sexy matching knickers and bra with garter belt and all. Your new husband will of course be ecstatic- provided he can get your dress off…
Do remember though, that if you plan to wear something like control top panties that hold you in and flatten your tummy and such- the ones that take you 10 minutes and an aerobics exercise to get yourself into- make sure you can get them off under your dress when you need to go to the loo!!
In all likelihood, you will be ready and dressed at least an hour before your wedding ceremony, and very possibly a lot sooner for the photographer’s sake.
If you can’t get your knickers off because they go up over your ribcage and under your bodice- you won’t be able to go to the loo for a good 8 hours or more!

Honestly. . . Whenever I look at any of my bridal magazines, or see something on TV, or even just think about what I’d like to do for myself one day- I have never seen myself with a traditional bridal bouquet. I have always seen myself with a clutch or draw-string bag completely covered in silk flowers instead. I absolutely love silk flowers (and feathers, and beads, and sequins, and fake fur… but that’s another post altogether!) And a bonus is that a handbag can hold things like lipsticks and extra hair clips as well as a hanky or tissues. . . and it could even be something to keep and use forever!
